The Satori BIP is a state of Kansas, certified Batterer’s Intervention Programs (BIP) operating in Lawrence, Kansas. Satori is committed to supporting men and women who have been identified as having patterns of abuse, power and control in intimate partner relationships. Abuse takes place in many different forms and does not necessarily have to be physical violence. We encourage participants to understand that abuse behaviors are usually carried out over the time line of the relationship, not just isolated incidents. Battering is about the systematic exercise of power and control in intimate partner relationships.
Over the 28 weeks Satori BIP staff place an emphasis on teaching individuals about distorted views of themselves and relationships, along with irrational core beliefs about how relationships function. Group members are asked to explore challenges in their lives that contribute to poor emotional regulation and poor decision making. Group members are expected to remain accountable throughout their time in the program and are encouraged to understand that the program is a starting point for the change process, which will need to occur in order to end intimate partner violence. Satori is a Japanese, Buddhist term meaning “Awakening”, group facilitators support participants in building self-awareness about internal conflicts that may drive abusive behaviors.
